Our EYFS Vision

Our Frenchwood Community Primary School motto is ‘Together We Grow’.

In our EYFS unit we lay the seeds to allow our children to flourish. We focus on opportunities for our children to develop their communication and language skills, through rich interactions and high-quality learning experiences. Children learn through play in a specially designed curriculum that engages and challenges. Our rich diversity enables us to learn from our local community and the wider world , encouraging our learners to be respectful and kind to one another. Our highly skilled adults model our collaborative and hardworking values. Our welcoming environment helps children feel safe and secure allowing everyone to feel success.

We welcome you to join our Frenchwood Family.

Welcome to our Early Years Foundation Stage.

Read Write Inc

Read Write Inc. is a popular phonics scheme. Like all phonics schemes, it teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. Read Write Inc. Phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level (and a small number of separately taught tricky words). The children will quickly feel confident and successful.

WellComm is a speech and language toolkit used by early years and primary practitioners.

An important part of WellComm is the age-appropriate Big Book of Ideas providing a total of over 150 instant, play-based activities so appropriate action can be taken straight away. Activities can be used with parents at home too, so that support is provided whether or not a child is referred to a speech and language therapist.

At Frenchwood, all children in Early Years are assessed within the first few weeks of starting. This highlights appropriate next steps and targets which they work towards with a trained member of staff.

Children are regularly assessed and moved on aiming to graduate from the programme when they are at the age appropriate section.

The Parent Cards below will provide you with ideas on how to support your child at home. Please speak to your child's class teacher to find out what section they are currently working on.

Welcome to Lower Key Stage 2.  We have three Y3/Y4 classes; Falcons, Harriers and Kestrels.

Class Pages

Hello, I am Miss Whalley the class teacher for Year 3/ 4 Falcons. I am supported by Mrs Riaz.  I am looking forward to being a part of your children's educational journey and seeing them grow.

Science - Pollination

We have been finding out how pollination works by reading secondary sources and watching a video all about it. We then summarised this into a comic strip explaining how the process works. We worked hard to use the scientific vocabulary we are learning such as nectar, pollen, transport, attract and reproduce.

Planning a Folktale

In English, we have been reading and exploring a Folktale called ‘The Enchantress of the Sands.’ In our planning phase, we have been discussing our ideas for a different wise character who will give the father a magical instrument to help him cross the signing sands. We have also had great fun using Talk for Writing and generating our own actions to retell the story.

Oracy - Discussion guidelines

We have been using lots of talk in Falcons to help us learn and share our ideas. As well as learning from one another, we are developing our communication skills such as active listening and speaking clearly. We talked about what makes a successful discussion and generated our own set of classroom discussion guidelines. Super ideas, everyone!

Planetarium Visit

In November 2022, we were treated to a visit from Lancaster University who brought their Planetarium to our school. We enjoyed venturing inside and finding out about the stars and planets in our galaxy. It was very exciting!

English

We loved celebrating World Book Day in school. We each came to school dressed up as one of our favourite book characters. To develop our love of reading, We visited a class in KS1 and shared stories with the younger children before coming back to class and completing some fun activities.

PSHE

We have been talking about kindness. We have been discussing how important it is to be kind to one another and to treat each other fairly. We have made some beautiful bookmarks and wristbands, have a look at our pictures below.

Science

As part of our Science we are carrying out longitudinal studies throughout the year. We will be observing the changes that we can see in the park such as habitats, plants and flowers and even animals that we may see when we are out.

Foundation Subjects

PE - Some of the children in LKS2 were picked to represent Frenchwood at a sports event at Christ the King High School. The children trained, learnt some new skills and most importantly had a great day out. Well done to everyone involved.

DT - In DT we have been creating robots linking to our English text 'The Iron Man'. We created movable arms and legs and a 3d head and body. The children loved creating these and the finished products are great.

RE

“We have far more in common with each other than that which divides us”. This week every child in school has been thinking about this quote and what it means to them. Thinking specifically about equality and diversity. The children have created some fantastic pieces of artwork independently to show what the quote means to them. The teachers of Frenchwood are so proud of some of the conversations that have been had in school as well as the amazing artwork produced.

LOOK AT WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING!

RHS gardens

Children enjoyed their visit to RHS gardens. They learned lots and had fun too!

MATHS

This half term we have been covering multiples, factors , division and fractions. Children have been working hard to spot patterns , explain their thinking and share their understanding with others.

Here are some examples of the fact files we created about multiples, factors, primes and composites.

Did you know a multiple of 3 can be spotted by adding up all of it's digits ; if the answer is 3, 6 , 9  you know it is a multiple of 3!

Examples:

36 = 3+6 = 9= a multiple of 3.

345 = 3+4+5 = 12 = 1 + 2 = 3 = a multiple of 3

5775 = 5+7+7+5 = 24 = 2+4 = 6 = a multiple of 3.

This is great if you need to quickly spot if a number divided by 3 will result in any remainders.

Prime numbers - We've been using our knowledge of arrays to help visualise prime numbers.

ENGLISH

In our English lessons over the last few weeks we have been looking at play scripts. We have learned their features, practised reading them aloud with expression and acting the scenes out and have even written our own scripts based on the story of Finn McCool.

SCIENCE

This half term's science is focused on the wonder of light! We have been carefully considering how light travels and enables us to view the world around us. This week we have been studying the eye and its inner-workings . Did you know our retina views the world upside down ? The image travels through the optical nerve into the brain which then flips the image the 'correct' way up. Amazing!

Welcome to Owls.

My name is Mrs Blackburn.

Children receive a QR code to access their "portfolio" - an area where they can submit homework and receive links to online learning.

TTRS (Times Table Rock Stars)

Knowledge of times tables in Year 6 is essential! They need a quick recall of their multiples to help them with other mathematical questions such as fractions and finding percentages. Times table knowledge can be improved with daily practise and what could be better than a game to help them do this?

Log in details are safely stuck inside journals.

This term our focus in computing has been mirco:bits, we have tinkered, debugged and programmed them to show many different things from our name, a stick man animation to finally a pedometer. Children have really enjoyed the challenge.

General Reminders

  • PE: We have two PE sessions a week, Thursdays (indoor) and Fridays (outdoor). Please make sure the children come to school in their PE kits on those days. If they have long hair, ensure it is tied back and earrings are taken out or covered.
  • Library: Each week, the children will have the opportunity to visit the school library and choose a new book to read and enjoy. This is on a Friday so please ensure their Library book is in school on that day so they do not miss out on this opportunity.
  • Water Bottles/Snack: Please ensure that your child brings a water bottle and a healthy snack to eat during snack break.
  • Homework: Children will receive homework every Friday and are expected to complete and return it the following week. Homework is either sent on paper or to children's dojo portfolios.
  • Learning journals: Children will record their learning each day in their learning journals. This is so parents can see what children have been learning in class that day and can talk about this at home. Children also record any reading they have done in their journals. We ask that children read to an adult 3 times a week. Please initial each day to state that you have listened to your child read. Weekly spellings are also stuck into journals each week. These are also sent via dojo.
